2017 Summer Softball Information

Registration for 2017 Summer travel softball closes Monday May 22nd.  We are entering teams in the MiddleEssex Fastpitch league.  This message describes the program and the process for participation.

When are the games and practices?

The league begins the last week of June and ends in mid August.  There are two games per week, one of which is always at home.  All games are on weeknight evenings, Mon – Thu.   Some of our teams may participate in one or two weekend tournaments during the summer, which are always very exciting and fun to be a part of.

While there are always some team practices, it is unusual to have more than one per week, and in some weeks the teams do not practice.

What is the level of play?

The rules are very similar to our Major League rules, and our teams have historically been very competitive.  The level of play is a step up, however, from the Rec league season.   While we seek to maintain the emphasis on fun and inclusive participation, the higher level of play requires that players are more often slotted into their best positions during the course of a season.

Is my daughter old enough/too old?

We will field a 10U, 12U, a 14U team and an 18U team.  Players qualify for an age group so long as they were of that age on January 1.  For instance, a player who turns 13 in March would still qualify for the 12U team because they were 12 on January 1.

How are teams selected?

Teams will be constructed the first week of June, out of those that have registered.  Due to the popularity of the league, and to the higher level of competitive play, not all players, unfortunately, will be selected.  However, the rosters are pretty large to accommodate family vacation schedules, and some players are also selected as alternates.   So while its sometimes competitive to make the team, its not necessary to be an elite player or all-star to do so.  We encourage you to sign your daughter up if she is interested in playing; there is a very good chance that there will be a spot for her.

There are occasions where players are asked to “play up” to a higher team to fill out a particular need at that level.   This also creates additional roster spots on the younger age groups.

Decisions about team selection will be made by a selection committee in June, composed of head coaches from the Rec league and the summer coaches.   Player evaluations will be done by gathering the collective feedback of the coaches who have watched the players all season.

What if we are going away during some part of the summer?

We understand that many of you have vacation plans, and will not be able to attend all of the games.  We do require that girls be able to make more than half the games in order to register.  The rosters are large in order to accommodate the many vacations.

How do I sign up?

Registration is now open!   The cost is $175 per player.

What other Summer opportunities are available?

We will also be organizing an in-town summer program, as we have in past years.  Details on this will follow within a few weeks.
